What's On

Regular Groups and Activities

  • Photographic Exhibition, during library opening times until 31 July 2026

Join us in our Reading Room Gallery to explore a collection of architectural photographs originally displayed at the Colchester Festival in July 1951. Discover familiar streets, buildings and scenes from exactly 75 years ago, and uncover the people, places and stories that form part of Colchester’s rich history. Also on display is a copy of the original Festival programme and a copy of the play "The Emperor Constantine" written especially for the festival by writer Dorothy L Sayers. The Colchester Festival was part of the 1951 Festival of Britain promoting British science, technology, architecture and arts. There were plays, concerts, exhibitions, a military tattoo, a carnival, a folk-dancing display, a rose show, cricket, a young people’s netball rally, a motorcycle display and fireworks. The exhibition is on until 31 July 2026
