<li>are applying for a Book Group Card which gives you the option to order multiple copies of a chosen title which can be borrowed for up to three months</li>
<li>can choose to join the book group list which can be shared with other interested readers</li>

<p>Are you age 14 or over? Are you looking for something to do during the summer holidays? Why not become a Summer Reading Challenge Volunteer?</p>

<h2><strong>What is the role about?&nbsp;</strong></h2>
<p>The Summer Reading Challenge is a national programme that runs during the school summer holiday. Children of all ages are encouraged to read six library books. All children taking part receive a certificate and a medal when they complete the challenge. You will be working with children and their parents or carers, encouraging them to join the challenge and talking to them about the books they have been reading.&nbsp;</p>

There will also be ongoing support from local library staff.&nbsp;</p>

Know Your Neighbourhood: Bringing Communities Together in Tendring

<p><span data-teams="true">We are so thrilled that Shenfield library is now open.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span data-teams="true">In the weeks leading up to the grand reopening, the community&rsquo;s enthusiasm was palpable. On February 22, 2025, a February Fun Day was organized in collaboration with Brentwood Connected to celebrate the library&rsquo;s return. The event featured face painting, animal handling sessions, creative crafts, and engaging storytime sessions, drawing families from all over Shenfield and beyond.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span data-teams="true">On February 26, 2025, Shenfield Library celebrated its grand reopening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a new chapter for this cherished community hub. The event was graced by the presence of the Mayor of Brentwood, esteemed councillors from across the county, representatives from Essex Housing, members of Friends of Shenfield, and Brentwood Connected. A special highlight was the attendance of students from Shenfield St. Mary&rsquo;s School, honoured for their outstanding achievement in winning the summer reading challenge. We sincerely hope they enjoyed their special storytime session with Storyteller Mike Dodsworth. <p>With the building work now completed, our new Shenfield Library will offer residents a bright, new modern library and commercial space, with nine high quality apartments above. &nbsp;The fit out of the library space will take place over the coming weeks, ready to welcome residents for a much-anticipated launch in February.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The new Shenfield library represents Essex County Council&rsquo;s first library to use Air Source Heat Pumps, with the development also including Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery and Electric Vehicle Charging Points for residents that exemplify the development&rsquo;s sustainable credentials. At the time of planning submission, the combined residential, library and commercial elements achieved a 54% carbon emission saving over and above building regulations. &nbsp; A new public garden, outdoor learning and activity space further enhances the library service offer. We are so close to opening and welcoming our residents.</p>

<h2>Join us as we mark World Poetry Day 2025 with a celebration of Harlow&rsquo;s writing talent.</h2>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This year, we've teamed up with Harlow Creates, Harlow Museum, and Harlow Council to present a poetry competition for all ages, for everyone who lives, works, or learns in Harlow.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The theme is Home, and can be interpreted however you like!&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>You may submit up to three poems, to be judged anonymously in three categories: 7 - 10, 11 - 17, and 18+.</p>

<h2>Are you ready to take part in fun, interactive activities this winter to help six dragon friends make their way home out of the cold?</h2>

<p>This year, your mission is to find the dragons who are lost around the dragon kingdom, and get them home to the castle before they get too cold! Complete six fun challenges from a choice of twelve. They include a range of cool things to read, make, and do!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Collect all six dragon stickers to 'find' them and complete the challenge! Plus, get a certificate and prize when you finish, and enter our big prize draw, where you can win amazing prizes like tablets, arts and crafts packs, book tokens, and toy dragons!</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>To sign up, visit your&nbsp;<a href="https://libraries.essex.gov.uk/digital-content/our-library-locations-and-opening-times" target="_blank" rel="noopener">local library</a> and collect your challenge booklet.</strong></p>

<p>The challenge starts on 2 January and runs through to the end of the February half term on 22 February. The challenge is aimed at children aged 0 to 12.</p>

<p>There are a great range of prizes available for the prize draw including tablets, arts and craft kits, book tokens and dragon themed toys.</p>

<p>Anyone who completes the Winter Reading Challenge can enter themselves into the prize draw by scanning the QR code on the certificate they receive. You can also ask staff to enter you into the draw when they register your completion of the Winter Reading Challenge.</p>
