Things to do over the summer holidays at Essex Libraries
21 July to 31 August
Looking for free, fun and creative ways to keep the kids entertained this summer? Essex Libraries have something for every family, with activities running right across the school holidays.
From the Summer Reading Challenge to crafts, storytimes and hands-on learning sessions, there are plenty of opportunities for children to explore, create and have fun at their local library.
Join the Summer Reading Challenge: Read to the Beat
The Summer Reading Challenge returns this year with the theme Read to the Beat, running from 18 July to 5 September 2026 in all Essex libraries.
Children can read any books they like, from stories and picture books to non-fiction, and will collect stickers along the way. Those who complete the challenge will receive a certificate and medal.
With a focus on creativity and the connection between stories and music, it’s a great way to keep children reading over the holidays while having fun.
Summer Reading Challenge events and activities
Alongside the challenge itself, many libraries are running special themed events inspired by Read to the Beat, bringing the theme to life!
Perfect for children who love music, crafting and trying something new!
Our variety of creative and interactive sessions includes:
- Summer craft workshops, where children can create summer or music themed arts and crafts, or even create their own instrument!
- Musical Instrument Discovery sessions, where children can test out different instruments and explore the joy of sound!
- Rhythmic storytimes, where children can enjoy stories and music together in an interactive session
- London Vegetable Orchestra workshop, where children will make their own instrument from a vegetable, discover how instruments produce sounds and learn a song
