New ‘read for pleasure’ app for Essex Library Service members

Mon 10/08/2026

Discover the joy of reading anew with the launch of a new Essex-branded version of Read On, an app designed to help build positive reading habits through fun challenges.

Developed by Libraries Connected and London Libraries, Read On takes a similar approach to the popular Couch to 5K programme in terms of reading, helping people gradually develop a regular reading routine. You can set personal reading goals, track your progress and take part in themed challenges. Read On also has book recommendations based on your mood, and quizzes about books.

To tie in with the Summer Reading Challenge and enable other family members to join in with their own reading, Essex Libraries has introduced three exclusive challenges for its members:

  • Family Reading Moments – spend quality time together by completing 150 minutes of shared or parallel reading over the summer.
  • Readingmaxing – Aimed at older children, teenagers and young adults; build a reading habit by reading for 20 minutes a day for 14 days.
  • Quick Reads Sprint – Rediscover reading through short, accessible books by reading four Quick Reads titles in six weeks.

You can download the Read On app and join Essex Libraries' reading challenges through Google Play (for Android devices) or the App Store (Apple devices).

Reading is fun – and even more so with the Read On app!
