This year’s challenge is all about the journey of Lyra the penguin. Challengers will help Lyra as she travels around the zoo, asking her animal friends all about how they celebrate the winter season differently around the world.
Children of all ages will need to complete at least 6 of the 12 challenges in our interactive booklet. There are prizes to all who finish, and an extra special prize to those who finish early! Some of the challenges can be completed in the library, view our events to find out what's happening in your area.
Running from Saturday 26 November to Saturday 28 January, the challenge will support children’s literacy skills. As well as this, some of challenges are completable in the library. This is part of Essex Library Services promise, to levelling up the community. Which can be found in ‘Everyone’s Library Service 2020-2026’.
The campaign is being led by Essex Library Service, in partnership with Penguin books and the Essex Year of Reading. The challenge is set to improve children’s independent learning skills. Essex Libraries also hope to increase diversity and inclusion in the community. Doing so by creating understanding around different cultures and celebrations. All while informing the public of the free resources available to all in libraries.
You can sign up to the challenge by visiting any of our Essex libraries!
One of this year's challenges is to write a book review and children are also being encouraged to enter their reviews into the latest Essex Year of Reading competition. A selection of entries will be included in a new Essex Year of Reading book which will be published next year to create a legacy of the campaign.
