Supporting our communities this Dementia Awareness Week

This Dementia Awareness Week, Essex Libraries is proud to highlight the role our libraries play in supporting people living with dementia, as well as their families, friends and carers.

Our libraries are welcoming, inclusive spaces where everyone can feel comfortable, connected and supported. Across Essex, we offer a range of services designed to promote wellbeing, reduce isolation and create opportunities for meaningful social interaction.

Memory Cafés

One of the key ways we support our communities is through our Memory Cafés. These friendly, informal sessions provide a safe and supportive environment for people living with dementia and their carers to meet others, share experiences, and enjoy activities together. Whether it’s a chat over a cup of tea, reminiscing activities or interactive games, our Memory Cafés help people stay connected and feel part of their community.

Our Memory Cafés are run by an incredible team of volunteers, who create a welcoming and supportive environment for our visitors. They run the activities, facilitate engaging conversations, and are the friendly faces of the group.

Alongside Memory Cafés, many of our libraries offer reminiscence resources, reading opportunities and accessible spaces to support those affected by dementia. Our staff are also trained to provide a warm welcome and help people access services in a way that works for them.

This week is an opportunity to raise awareness, reduce stigma and celebrate the power of community. Whether you attend a session, join the library or volunteer your time, there are many ways to get involved and support people living with dementia in Essex.
