Celebrating the Legacy of Dorothy L. Sayers at the Essex Book Festival 2025
Dorothy L. Sayers (1893-1957) was a multifaceted literary figure, celebrated for her contributions as a crime writer, poet, playwright, essayist, translator, and Christian humanist. A scholar of both classical and modern languages, Sayers is best remembered for her series of mystery novels and short stories set between the World Wars, featuring the charming and astute amateur sleuth, Lord Peter Wimsey.
Founded in 1976, the Dorothy L. Sayers Society is dedicated to promoting the study of Sayers's life, works, and thoughts. The Society encourages engagement with her plays, and the preservation of original materials for future generations. It serves as a vital forum and information centre, connecting members with resources and fellow enthusiasts.
The Annual D.L.S Lecture is a highlight in the Essex Book Festival, welcoming crime fiction aficionados, Sayers devotees as well as our members. Each year, a distinguished speaker, often a crime writer, delivers a talk that explores broader themes within the genre. This event is open to the public as an author event, offering a unique opportunity to celebrate Sayers's literary achievements and her lasting impact on crime fiction.
The Essex Book Festival, in collaboration with the Dorothy L. Sayers Society is set to host an event, taking place on 12 June at Witham Library, featuring acclaimed crime novelist Jane Casey, known for her gripping Maeve Kerrigan series. Casey's novels gained critical acclaim for their intricate plots and honest characters, making her an ideal choice to honor Sayers's legacy.
