Would you or someone you know benefit from having a Reading Friend to talk to on the phone?

The Reading Friends scheme brings people together with trained volunteers to read, share stories, meet new friends, and have fun. It’s been happening for some time elsewhere in the UK, and has been highly effective in reducing social isolation. After taking part, 83% of participants reported feeling more connected to other people.

We use reading – whether books, magazines, newspapers, or anything else – to start everyone chatting. Together with participants we ensure that Reading Friends meets each person’s needs and matches their interests. We’ll soon be setting up virtual groups too, using video call technology. Eventually, in-person groups in libraries are planned when restrictions lift. We’ll ensure a safe environment for these, adhering to Government and public health guidelines.
