Congratulations to “We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea” and “Secret Waters” by Arthur Ransome the joint winners of the Books That Rock Essex!

Secret Waters is set in and around Hamford Water, close to Walton-on-the-Naze and in We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea, they set sail from Harwich. Both books are in the popular Swallows and Amazons series.

In third place, was The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry, set in and around Colchester. The other titles in the top five were, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and 1984 by George Orwell.

To celebrate turning 20 years old, the Essex Book Festival had asked for suggestions for the best reads with an Essex connection. The top 20 titles were then put to a public vote and the winner was announced live on BBC Essex from a festival book group event at Chelmsford Library on Thursday 28 March.
