Calling all secondary school teachers, librarians and learning centre resource managers!
Essex Library Services offers a wide range of wonderful resources for pupils and teachers, both physical and online, and our new Secondary School Resource Card now offers secondary school teachers, librarians and learning resource centre managers a unique and convenient way to make use of these and promote them to colleagues and pupils.
Following a pilot last year, Luigi Callegari, Learning Resource Centre Manager at St Helena, Colchester, said I've been able to promote digital resources as an incentive to card ownership for both staff/students. It has given the school a digital element overnight and I have been able to try a range of online formats.
The Secondary School Resource Card enables you to log in to our entire suite of premium online resources without compromising your personal data. For example, e-magazines can be borrowed on the card for class use, and you can compile your own booklists on the catalogue. You can also borrow up to 14 books for up to 12 weeks at a time (renewable for further periods), to supplement the items in your own collection.
Using the Secondary School Resource Card in class is a great way for students to learn about the library service and the rich variety of online resources that can help them with homework, leisure, mental health and well-being, and a means of demonstrating to them the benefits of joining and actively using the library themselves.
Some of these online resources – all of them free of charge - are:
To obtain your card, just ask at your local Essex library. Please note: You’ll need to bring proof to show you work at the secondary school (ID badge or letter on headed paper).
A promotional tool and aid to learning, the Secondary School Resource Card is not intended to replace individual library cards, which enable one to borrow a broader range of resources. If you haven’t joined Essex Library Services yourself, there’s never been a better time to join.
