National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) challenges people each November to write 50,000 words of a novel in 30 days. Novels that have been drafted during NaNoWriMo include Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

In order to encourage Essex residents to get involved with NaNoWriMo, we will be sharing some helpful novel writing tips, tricks and prompts over on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts throughout November.

As well as this, we have lots of exciting author events, book groups and writing groups taking place at selected libraries which will hopefully help to encourage the creative writing process. Our libraries are also ideal locations from which to write your 50,000 words.

Councillor Louise McKinlay, Deputy Leader of Essex County Council and Cabinet Member for Community, Equality, Partnerships and Performance said: “National Novel Writing Month is an amazing opportunity for adults to work on writing 50,000 words of a novel in just 30 days and improve their reading and writing skills in the process. Literacy is at the heart of the levelling up agenda and I encourage everyone to visit one of our libraries in November to find out what books, resources and services we have on offer to help you.”
