Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is Sunday 27 January and the theme this year is Torn from Home. You can discover more about how the Holocaust, subsequent genocides and more recent conflicts wrested people from everything they called home, by reading one of the recommended books: from our HMD 2019 booklist. Our booklist for children will help children and young people understand more about the issues.  You could also have a look at an HMD display in one of 28 libraries, between Monday 21 January to Saturday 2 February and pick up a sticker to show your support. Find out which libraries will have a display below.

You can also pick up a free booklet from any Essex library, explaining more about how genocides arise, and the work of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust

HMD 2019 also marks the twenty fifth anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda, which began in April 1994, and the fortieth anniversary of the end of the genocide in Cambodia. Join us in reflecting on these themes and challenging prejudice.

"I didn’t feel like I had a home after the genocide because everything was destroyed. I had no home at all. I had nothing."

- Marie Chantal Uwamahoro, survivor of the genocide in Rwanda
