We are pleased to announce that the redevelopment of the Shenfield Library site is going ahead!

Once complete, Shenfield Library will have a new and exciting, modern, energy efficient library built on the existing site.

Essex Housing, Essex County Council’s in-house development company, are ready to proceed with their programme of work and will take over the site very soon in readiness for the demolition and construction work to start. During this time Shenfield Library will move out and operate from a temporary location at Bishops Hill Adult Community Learning Centre (ACL), which has been upgraded for this purpose.

To prepare for the move, the library will be closed for two weeks from 5pm Saturday 7 May 2022 and will reopen at Bishops Hill Adult Community Learning Centre (ACL), Rayleigh Road, Hutton, CM13 1BD on Monday 23 May 2022.

During this time the mobile library will be parked outside for customers to renew, return or borrow items. Customers can also access library services at other locations or online. The closest alternative libraries are at Brentwood and Ingatestone. All loan and renewal dates for items borrowed from Shenfield Library have been extended until 4 June 2022. If you wish to reserve an item during this time you can select another library to collect it from.

When the library reopens at Bishops Hill the opening hours will remain the same. Customers will have access to Wi-Fi, computers, printing, scanning and photocopying. Families will be able to attend Rhymetime and collect Bookstart Packs. Hearing aid batteries can be picked up or any used batteries dropped off for recycling. Details of events and activities will be published on the events page of the website and on Facebook.

Cllr Louise McKinlay, Deputy Leader said, “Shenfield Library is a much-valued local asset for the whole community, and the new and enhanced facility will ensure users can enjoy an even better library and service. During construction, the library services will continue to be provided to the local community from Bishops Hill, with the same opening times and many of the same services as the current library offers.”
