You can access Essex Libraries even if you can’t get to a library building, or have difficulty reading standard print.
For people with learning disabilities
For information on inclusive communication, visit Inclusive Communication Essex where you can find out about free resources, including communication equipment.
The Essex Local Offer lists services and support for children and young adults up to the age of 25 who have special educational need or disabilities.
Sensory walls
Our sensory walls in Basildon Library, Chelmsford Library, Loughton Library and Colchester Library support children and adults with specific needs, such as learning disabilities, sensory impairment and dementia.
The walls include features such as:
- an activity panel
- a sound-activated infinity tunnel
- an LED light panel that reacts to touch and noise
- animal sounds
- mirrors
- an interactive video floor
There are regular open public sessions when different aspects of the walls are available. The walls can also be transformed into fully functioning sensory rooms and can be booked in advance for exclusive use by groups.
